Ashley's 30 for 30 Picks

Posted by: Ashley

I've mentioned the 30 for 30 challenge a time or two in the past few weeks, but seeing as how it's going to be starting tomorrow, I'm going to elaborate. Basically I pick 30 items out of my wardrobe (excluding accessories) and remix them for 30 outfits. It's to a) teach you how to shop in your own closet, b) help you save money and c) get creative with outfits you might not normally wear.

Because our room is dark and I can't take pictures of the clothes I chose, I will tell you what they are. I know it's not as fun, but hey! You'll get to see them all anyway soon! What I have is:

8 blouses +
4 sweaters +
3 jackets +
2 dresses +
1 pair of shorts +
4 pants +
4 skirts +
4 pairs of shoes =

Kendi is the one who started the 30 for 30 challenge. Here is a look of how she remixed her outfits for the Summer challenge (how cute is she?!):

The challenge starts tomorrow, and seeing as how I have the next two days off, be prepared for outfits #1 and #2 super soon!

Speaking of Print on Print...

...Anne Hathaway clearly did not get the memo:

Yikes!

Print on... Print.

Lately I've seen a lot of prints mixed together. While I'm not the most adventurous person with my clothing, there are a few outfits I'd like to try. First, let's start with what a bad print on print mixture looks like:

Katy Perry

When working with prints, here are some do's and don'ts:

DO have similar colors in both prints. A pastel shirt with a neon green skirt probably isn't the best idea
DON'T wear head to toe one print a la Katy Perry
DO wear something you feel comfortable in. If you don't feel comfortable, people can tell
DON'T be afraid of what people will think. You might be pleasantly surprised with the compliments
DO look online and see what kind of mixes you like
DON'T mix too many prints together

The combination I see everywhere right now is a mix of stripes and florals and/or polka dots. Here are three outfits I put together with these prints. All images are from Forever 21 unless noted. I chose Forever 21 due to their affordable prices for trendy clothing and wide range of styles:

#1: This outfit is probably the best outfit to ease into wearing prints together. I stuck with something light and not too bold. The navy skirt will bring out the navy in the flowers on the shirt, and the scarf can be used to break up the prints even more if it makes the person wearing it feel more comfortable about the print. This is my favorite outfit out of the three. I would wear this on a date, to church, or on a warm spring beer tasting adventure. Yum.

#2: This is also not too hard of an outfit to wear. The grey in the stripes of the sweater look great with the floral print top and the two don't compete with each other. I paired it with jeans because I feel like a skirt would make the outfit TOO attention grabbing, and I paired it with grey heels because I don't want the attention being drawn to the shoes, but rather up to the shirt and face. This looks like a Saturday errands/lunch/shopping outfit to me.

#3: I see this outfit as the most daring of them all, simply because of the boldness of the colors. I do love the contrast between the skirt and sweater though. The navy coordinates with the navy in the skirt, but it definitely is not matchy-matchy. I think the cowboy boots give it an unexpected twist and the bangles add an accessory to the outfit without being overbearing. Pairing tights with this outfit would also work well! I would wear this to a concert, art gallery (not that I ever go to those), lunch and/or dinner, or who knows, maybe while sitting around watching TV.

There you have it. Mixing prints. It's a daunting task, I definitely admit that. I recommend Googling outfits with different prints and seeing which ones you like. Another option is to pair a solid color sweater/shirt over the printed shirt. That way, it breaks up the print but a hint of it still pokes through.

Belted Glory

Posted by: Ashley

When?: January 30, 2011
Where?: Church
Top: Anthropologie
Belt: Anthropologie
Jacket: Hollister
Skirt: Banana Republic
Boots: Steve Madden
Necklace: Borrowed from Gran
Earrings: Anthropologie

Another new week. They go by so fast these days. I can't believe that Tuesday is already February! This morning Matt and I went to church... and nothing else. We were both so hungry that we just came home and scarfed down food and now here I am. I wish I had the rest of the day off, but in an hour I'm off to work. Oh boy!

I've never worn this outfit together before. The shirt I've had for over five years. New Years Eve 2005 I conned my dad into buying it and the belt for me and this skirt I haven't worn since I was teaching. I wanted to try to utilize it in my daily activities since I like it and I think it was fairly successful. I think I might put it in part of my 30 for 30 choices since I want to try wearing it more often. Speaking of, I will be posting what items I am choosing for 30 for 30 soon, I work until 9 tonight and then 10 hours tomorrow, so it might not be until the first day of the challenge starting (Tuesday.) Okay - back to the outfit. I was going to wear heels with it, but then decided that my boots were warmer. I'm glad I wore them, because it was a tad chilly today at church.

Matt (I'm sick of calling him M. since I type out Matt every time anyway) has gotten into the habit of taking pictures while we are walking, here is one of today's results - me smiling yet looking like I have zero idea what I'm doing. Which is actually kind of true most of the time:

Blazing Stripes

Posted by: Ashley

When?: January 29, 2011
Where?: Farmers Market
Top: GAP
Blazer: Macy's
Jeans: GAP
Boots: Zigi Soho via DSW
Necklace: Borrowed from Gran
Watch: Fossil

Get the title? Blazing = Blazer? I know, I know you don't have to say it, I'm so clever. Ha.

This morning Matt and I went to the Farmers Market and failed to get anything besides a chicken mole tamale that we ate there and an iced tea for me. Win! After that, I went and returned some whatnot at GAP before heading to Sprouts to go buy food to make Pad Thai (that M. is making right now, thanksloveyou!) and some oils so that I can make my own facial serum seeing as how the Burt's Bees facial serum was $18. So if I start breaking out in the next coming weeks, you know it's because I butchered the facial serum and need to adjust how much of what I put in there. If anyone is curious though, the oils I bought were jojoba oil, sweet almond oil and apricot kernel oil.

It was pretty windy while taking pictures, but we worked with it. I bought this shirt online and then accidentally had it shipped to my in-laws house, so I didn't see if for a few weeks. I'm starting to love these boots and M. likes them because they don't have a heel. Win/win for both of us. I bought this blazer at Macy's with a gift card that Gran got me for Christmas. I love gift cards. Overall, the outfit is pretty simple, but I liked the way it looked together. I say looked because as soon as I got home the boots and jeans came off and were replaced with things far more comfortable for blogging and watching my husband cook.

And now...

I'll Love Ya Tomorrow

Posted by: Ashley

I didn't blog today. I fail. I'm sitting here watching a friend try on wedding dresses, and didn't get a chance to take pictures. She looks beautiful though, so that makes up for it!

I'll be back tomorrow with some outfit pictures. Happy Friday!

A Little Bit Country

Posted By: Ashley

**Warning: Picture Heavy**

Not quite sure what I'm looking at, but at least it gives a view of the entire outfit:

M.'s artistic photo:

When?: January 27, 2011
Where?: Food and errands
Top: GAP
Skirt: GAP
Belt: Anthropologie
Jacket: Hollister
Boots: Steve Madden

I feel very country-ish in this outfit. This outfit was inspired by the song "Country Strong" seeing as I heard it on the way back from the gym. Which reminds me, why is that song being played on country radio? It's from a movie... and while Gwyneth Paltrow sounds good, she's not a country singer. Oh well. Anyway, after the gym, I decided that I was hungry, but because I didn't want to clean the kitchen (seeing as how I just cleaned it very well this morning) I went and got a burger at Mighty Fine. It was delicious. Then I came back, watched some John Adams and went to go run some errands with Matt. Now, here I am, writing to my mother and whoever else reads this blog.

So this shirt I've had for ages. I bought it about a year and a half ago before I started teaching. This skirt I got pretty cheaply at GAP and the jacket I've had for roughly 6 years... that would be why it's from Hollister. I bought it back in the days where I thought Hollister was awesome. Back before life after college and before I realized their clothes were cheaply made, not made for my body type and way too expensive in general.

So as usual, here are some not so refined photos:

Do you remember that song? It's by Mandy Moore circa 1999. I'm playing it on YouTube right now. I'm awesome. WELL (obviously)*, the reason I'm listening to it is because I was looking at pictures of Mandy from the Tangled premieres. I haven't seen the movie yet, but I heard it's cute! So, I was looking at pictures and thinking about how far she has come. It's amazing that this little girl with the terrible pink shirt (and you should SEE the skirt!)...

...turned into this beautiful woman:

Talk about a transformation, right? Back to looking at pictures... I've seen three pictures of her from different Tangled premieres, and while she looks good in at all of the premieres, I'm going to rank them from my least favorite to my favorite.

#3: Tangled Premiere Australia: Well, while Mandy looks lovely, I feel like the dress is ill-fitting and I'm not quite sure about the shoes. I can say that her hair looks simple and romantic and that her makeup looks natural and dewy.

#2: Tangled Premiere Los Angeles: Love the dress and I love the color! It reminds me yesterday when we talked about the Pantone Color of the Year. Her hair looks fantastic pulled off her face, and her skin is luminous and milky. The one thing I'm not crazy about here are the shoes. They look too... chunky. I would have much preferred a simple pump.

#1: Tangled Premiere UK: Love the hair, dress, shoes and necklace. Her hair is very similar to the last picture, but I prefer this one more. The cut of the dress looks awesome on her, and her statement necklace is noticeable, but does not draw too much attention away from the rest of her outfit. The heels provide a pop of color and I love that they are more of a satin-y red rather than bright red. Love, love, love. I wish Mandy was my real friend instead of me just pretending we're bff's.

She's come so far, it's like watching your little (yet older) sister grow up. I LOVE YOU MANDY! Ah hem, sorry. That was my inner 13 year old coming out.

I know I said I would be doing an outfit post today and I will be! Hooray! I just need to get my booty in gear and go to the gym so I can come shower and get on with my life.

*Did anyone get that reference? I'm pretty sure Sister #2 did. For those of you who don't know, check this out.

Ashley's Top Trends and Colors

Posted by: Ashley

I have good news and bad news. Which do you want first? The bad news, got it. Well, the bad news is that I don't have an outfit post for today. I know, right? I fail. I woke up, lounged around, went to the gym and am now going to work. Please forgive me! Now for the good news. The good news is tomorrow I WILL have an outfit post (I have no excuse because I'm off of work), I will also have an outfit post Friday, Saturday AND Sunday.

So keeping in the style of yesterday, I'm going to talk a little about some of my favorite trends and about the color of the year. All pictures will be from least to most expensive.

Trend #1: Stripes. Stripes are EVERYWHERE. They litter the front page of J. Crew, they are all over Forever 21 as well as Anthropologie, and don't even get me started about Ralph Lauren's website. I love the stripe trend when done right. Head to toe stripes, not so much... a well placed striped shirt? Sure! Striped flats? Sure! Striped swimsuit? Sure! Here are some of my favorite stripes:

Trend #2: Denim. Yes, most people wear jeans often. But all kinds of denim is in right now. Shirts, jackets, dresses, I've even seen denim shoes. Most of these are in the form of chambray, which is a finer weave of denim. It's not as durable, but it's very comfortable. I've already showed you a chambray skirt above, as well as a dress in yesterday's post

Trend #3: Color blocks. I love unexpected colors together. Here are a few of my favorites (Except note that it is different on each computer screen and that my skills at finding the exact right color are not exceptional):

Tomato and blush. This is my absolute favorite.

Mustard and Olive

Honeysuckle and Blush Pink

Mustard and Plum

Tomato and Orange

Plum and Olive

Honeysuckle and Orange

While these are definitely not the only trends right now, they are three big ones. Other honorable mentions go to:

Switching gears, let's talk about the "it" color.  I used this color in the images above. It's the Pantone color of the year. Honeysuckle. Here is Honeysuckle as seen on a few celebrities:

While pretty, the only one I can imagine wearing is Julianne Moore's outfit. Let's look at other working pieces in Honeysuckle:

Well, there you have it. Trends and colors I love. I'll be trying these out as the weeks go by, I just have to get creative with my closet seeing as how I can't buy anything else. Also coming up is Kendi's 30 for 30, so I'll have to try to incorporate these trends into that challenge. Now I'm off to go stare at my closet wishing I could wear real clothes instead of my work uniform...

Stay tuned for an outfit post tomorrow!
